Dawulan

Another fortified settlement, or enclosure highlighted by Kovalev and Erdenebaatar is Dawulan (大烏蘭), found in GuYang County (固陽) in Inner Mongolia. This enclosure dwarfs the other enclosures I provided examples of here. The scaling/compression on WordPress makes it a bit difficult to spot – the red spot is roughly in the centre of it:

It took my eyes a while to adjust and find it, now conveniently marked out for you in black:

It looks pretty large just from this close up view, but here are its approximate dimensions:

  • The total length of the walls are 7.5km.
  • At its longest point the walls are separated by 2km.
  • At its widest 1.5km
  • Dawulan covers an area of approximately 61800 square metres.

To offer some visual context this map shows Dawulan’s distance from the Huang He (Yellow River), and even at this zoomed out level the wall shape remains defined.

Kovalev and Erdenebaatar do not offer any explanation or information about Dawulan, it is just included in a list of Tangut era structures found in Inner Mongolia. So if you have any further information about the site let me know!
